Leclerc Loom Warp Path

The warp threads on a Leclerc loom start out wrapped around the Warp Beam at the back and follow a path through the loom where they end up as woven fabric on the Cloth Beam at the front. The picture below shows the path they take.

They wind around the Warp Beam, up to the Rear Thread Beam, across the loom horizontally to the Shaft Frame where they go through a Heddle Eye and continue toward the front of the loom going through a dent in the Reed and then to the top of the Front Thread Beam. They then go down and wind around the Cloth Beam.

This applies to all Leclerc floor and table looms. The only variation is with the Minerva loom which has a wooden roller attached to the front of the Jack Box to move the cloth away from the weaver's knees. On this model the warp threads are routed over the roller between the Front Thread Beam and the Cloth Beam.

Warp Beam Rotation Direction

When warping the loom, the weaver rotates the Crank Handle on the Warp Beam in a clockwise direction (when viewed from the right side of the loom). The Brake on the loom is designed to stop the Warp Beam from Rotating in a Counter-Clockwise direction as this is the direction the beam turns when the warp is advance while weaving.

Because the Brake operates in this one direction, the Crank handle can often still be rotated clockwise when the Brake is engaged although it may make some noise. This is not a problem but it is normally a good idea to release the Brake when winding on a warp.

Common Mistakes

Note that the warp being wound the wrong way around the warp beam is often the cause of the brake slipping. If this occurs it must be rewound onto the warp beam in the correct direction. This should be possible without untieing the warp by carefully winding the warp onto the cloth beam and then rewinding it back on the Warp Beam in the correct direction. If you have a lot of room behind the loom and a second person, they can lift the breast beam up and off the loom under the warp and walk it back to unwind it.

Another problem can occur if the warp is threaded directly from the Heddles to the Warp Beam, bypassing the rear Thread Beam. This results in the weaver being unable to create a shed while treadling and can be easily corrected by reducing the tension on the warp, removing the Rear Thread Beam, inserting it under the warp and lifting it and the warp threads up to reinstall it back on the loom frame.

Cloth Beam Rotation

When the weaver advances the warp by lifing the Take-Up Motion Handle, the Cloth Beam is rotated Clockwise to wind on the cloth. The Ratchet and Pawl system only allows the beam to rotate in this direction. Only by moving the Pawls out of contact with the Ratchet Wheel, can it be rotated backwards. This is done when weaving is finished and the fabric is being unwound or when the warp has been advanced too much.

Apron Installation Tip

When the aprons are installed on the Warp and Cloth Beams they are oriented to wind on the same way the warp winds on to the Warp Beam and the way the finished fabric winds on to the Cloth Beam. If a mistake is made while installing them on one of the large Leclerc floor looms and the apron is oriented the wrong way, try just switching the metal beam ends by unscrewing them and installing them on the opposite end to reverse the apron direction. This removes the need to remove the staples or tacks and prevents damage to the apron.
