Rigid Heddles

Rigid Heddles

Rigid Heddles enable a simple loom design replacing both the heddles and the reed with a a solid reed-like board that alternates vertical slits with holes. The Rigid Heddle is sleyed in a similar fashion as a reed and both the slits and the holes are used. Once this is done the weaver can easily raise or lower every other warp thread to create a shed for weaving plain weave. Like the bergere on a conventional loom, the Rigid Heddle can also be used to beat the weft in place evenly.

These Rigid Heddles are made by Leclerc for Looms like their Bergere Rigid Heddle and Penelope II Tapestry Loom as well as for other looms. They have a wood frame and durable styrene (plastic) teeth.

Note: While Leclerc Rigid Heddles may fit looms by other manufacturers, we cannot confirm this and only provide dimensions to allow the purchaser to decide this for themselves.

Rigid Heddle Dimensions

The width below indicates the weaving width which is approximately the horizontal measurement of the inside plastic part of the Rigid Heddle (ie. the part where the threads run through). The actual wooden frame on some of the rigid heddles is 1 1/2 inches (3.8cm) longer at each end on one side to allow the Rigid Heddle to sit on a loom support. This means that the total length of the heddle can be 3 inches (7.6cm) longer than the weaving width. The plastic part of the heddle is 3 1/4 inches (8.3cm) high and the wooden frame at the top and bottom brings the total height to 4 11/16 inches (12cm).

Extensions and Models

Some rigid heddles have an extended wood upper frame piece (see picture above) to allow the rigid heddle to sit on posts on either side of looms like the Bergere and some have the frame cut off to allow the rigid heddle to slide in a slot like the Penelope. If this is important to your application, please contact us when ordering to find out which version you wish. To ensure it fits your Leclerc, please advise us which specific model of Leclerc loom the rigid heddle is for.

Over the years Leclerc has also made various versions of their Penelope and Bergere looms which explains why different widths of Rigid Heddles are available. The chart below indicates which fit the current models but other sizes may be required for older looms. Please advise us of the loom model and weaving width when ordering.
