Colonial v2 Floor Loom |
The Leclerc Colonial v2 adapts the traditional handloom design used by our ancestors updating it with a number of modern improvements while maintaining the classic look. Constructed with the finest Canadian Maple hardwood, it is finished with clear lacquer and varnish so that the beauty of the natural wood remains visible.
The Colonial v2 is available in both 45" and 60" weaving widths and can be ordered with 8 or 12 shafts. Kits are available to add more shafts allowing a weaver to start with basic 8 shaft weaves and then expand to 12 later as they become more proficient. The floating lams, overhead jacks and hanging shafts produce a multi-shaft loom that is easy to treadle and quiet in operation. The loom's friction break and cloth advance rachet are sturdy enough for high tension warps and can be easily activated while the weaver is sitting. Note that a larger version of the picture to the left can be found by clicking on the image.
The Colonial series of looms were upgraded in 2008 with the improved Jack mechanism now found in the Colonial v2. These improvements include bushings for the jacks to ride on, rerouting of the cords to the sides instead of through the warp, a back-hinge treadle design that is lower and more comfortable for the weaver, and a new tie-up system to speed up the process and minimize the chance of cord mix-up. The result is a vastly improved loom design with a wider and cleaner shed.
The rear folding feet of the Colonial v2 give the loom a high degree of stability when weaving, but like the back beam, fold in to reduce its size when the loom is being moved or stored. This can occur even when the loom is warped. Non-sliding polyvinyl footpads at the base of the loom keep it from slipping on the floor.
Like all Leclerc looms, the Colonial v2 comes with two more foot treadles than the number of shafts (10 on the 8 shaft and 14 on the 12 shaft). The standard "back-hinged" treadle design increases the weaver's leg leverage producing a wide, clean shed with less effort while ensuring even tension on all treadle cords with the treadles in either the rest or depressed position.
A set of pre-measured treadle cords are included which fasten to the treadles using the removable treadle hooks. Also, the breast and back beams on the loom can be easily removed to make warp threading a simpler task. Like all other Leclerc floor looms, the Colonial v2 is equipped with a regular warp beam to which a set of optional rake like pieces can be attached to convert it to a sectional warp beam. A Flying Shuttle Beater option is also available to speed up the weaving process and/or for those weavers with a limited reach.
The basic Colonial v2 comes with a underhand beater mechanism, but an optional kit will convert this to a Hanging Overhead Beater (see picture to right). In addition, Weighted Beater Options are available for Rug Weavers that increase the beater weight and enable the weaver to increase their beating force. Depending on the loom width and whether both or just one of the upper and lower weighted bars are added, the beater weight can be increased by 4 to 13 pounds. The weighted bars have internal weights, evenly distributed along the length of the beater bars and can be added and removed as needed, even when the loom is warped and in use.
